Other people's drama

I don't think I've made any secret of my dislike for Amanda Palmer, and ever since she and Neil Gaiman got together it's been a decade long process of coming to terms with the fact maybe he wasn't ever that awesome to begin with. But there's still a great deal of residual affection from having consumed basically his entire body of work at a formative age. So I have found the best course of action is to just pretend AFP doesn't exist, except when she does something incredibly stupid on Twitter.

So idk what happened at the end of April, but apparently Neil is in the UK now instead of in New Zealand where he, Amanda, their kid, and their nanny were riding out the pandemic? Seems kinda irresponsible to fuck off out of two different hemispheres in general but during a time when nobody should be traveling? Yeah.

Also apparently there was some sort of dust-up yesterday(?) with Neil whitesplaining Lovecraft and racism which I have not looked into because nobody needs that shit, especially after the whole thing with The Graveyard Book and dead Indians.

AND THEN today AFP posted a thing on her Patreon that kinda sounded like they'd broken up? Which seemed to have taken Neil by surprise? (Also apparently Neil promoted Tori Amos's new book on Amanda's birthday without also wishing his own damn wife a happy birthday?)

I wish I didn't have to keep in mind there's a poor little four year old boy who's probably missing his dad so I could just enjoy this stupid, stupid drama the way it's meant to be gawped at.

I've realised since I woke up and saw all of this that it's maybe not common knowledge that Gaiman is a massive creep towards women with less power than him? Not fans (as far as I've heard), but publicists, assistants, that tier of women. The Melbourne publishing whisper network has been shouting about this for a decade or more -- I heard it back when I worked at Borders.

A couple nights ago, I realized that if Pratchett was still around, he'd have made sure to devote more time to the humans and the Them in the Good Omens miniseries. For Gaiman, those characters weren't a priority; for Pratchett, he understood they were the real heroes of the piece.

Which is to say, I'm not at all surprised to hear about what Gaiman's up to right now.
