Nov. 10th, 2012 12:59 pmThis is what I did last night:
Leonard Cohen sounds like smoke, scotch, and sex and is still spry enough to do the Gangnam Style horse dance off the stage. Twice. (ngl, it broke my brain a little bit.) If I am half as badass as he is at 78 I will consider myself satisfied. (Also I think we may need to institute a "You must be this at least as badass as Leonard Cohen to wear a fedora" rule, because oh god, some of the people at this concert.)
I feel like this was an auspicious closing out for 29 going into 30. It feels good. Bring it on. I'm ready.

May. 29th, 2011 11:14 pmLife update:
Cody has new job. Starts the first. Annual household income will now approach something people may consider lower middle class. Possibly even middle middle class. (This is all basically an excuse to link to this Veronica Mars clip. That was when I fell in love with the show.)
Have quit Canadian job. Surprisingly sad to leave. Accepted contract position at large search company. Not the homegrown one, the other one. Also going to talk to another company that has position actually related to field of study. Job, alas, requires talking to the public and technical support. We'll see what happens with that.
Moving back to Seattle on the 4th. Have lovely new apartment with a fireplace(!), in-suite laundry(!!), and a dishwasher(!!!), all for 15% less than what we were paying in Vancouver. It also has a sunken living room, which I am told is Very Classy and Upscale. I look forward to non-sucky Netflix, Mexican food, and a profound reduction in my daily sightings of Louis Vuitton (no, seriously, I saw a LV fanny pack on the bus once) and Coach accessories. I shall miss single-payer health care and sane(r) politics.
See y'all on the flip side of the border.

Mar. 3rd, 2011 12:33 pmBig announcement time.
Cody and I are moving back to Seattle in June/July-ish. I can't even find a full-time job here, UBC sucks, and I have never hated a city I've lived in more than Vancouver. It feels like the city is so good at becoming other things/places that it talks more than it walks, and thus it ends up being the most self-involved boorish place ever. Maybe the Olympics killed it, maybe it was always this way. But I hate it so, so much. It's a shitty place to be poor, and the levels of class obliviousness and unconscious privilege here make me want to stab people. (FFS, you know you're doing it wrong when the Americans are the most polite people you encounter on a daily basis.)
Please don't take this to mean that I'm giving up on Canada forever! I really like having health care and being part of a society that doesn't think tolerance and inclusiveness are bad words. I mean, y'all stopped the Canuck version of Fox News from getting on air because you still think it's unacceptable to lie on broadcast news. Same-sex marriage and the right to choose are here to stay and neither God nor Stephen Harper can do a fucking thing about it. I will miss these things greatly, but I just can't do Vancouver anymore. So I guess it's more of a strategic retreat before we run out of money and give-a-fuck.
I hope it works out better next time, because it sure as hell didn't this round.

I am a double master now, and can now put MLIS and MPA after my name. But I won't do that except in professional situations, because that's pretentious. John Simm's got nothing on me, muthafuckas.
It still feels a little bit surreal, coming to the end of something I've worked three years for. (It's totally cost me my hair, in color and amount. My mom wonders if it's because I've used my brain too much, but I digress.) But I look forward to getting used to it.
I suppose it's as good a place and time as any to announce that Cody and I will be moving to Vancouver, BC in August. He got accepted to the University of British Columbia to do his B.Sc. in physics. Given that I haven't found a job yet, this will be interesting, but I trust we'll figure something out. So if you know of places that are into teleworking or remote research/analysis or have information-y/analysis positions in the Vancouver metro area, please let me know. Tips on apartment hunting in the area would be welcome as well. Vancouver proper is our preferred location, although we would not discount Burnaby, New Westminster, North Vancouver or Richmond if it's near an express bus/Skytrain to UBC.
I will miss Seattle and the friends we have made here (seriously, this building new social networks thing is fkn hard), but I think this is the best decision for us now. I look forward to it.
