Hoefler & Frere-Jones, a font foundry, compares the use of typography by Obama, Clinton, and McCain. Clinton's typography is meh to me--it's not spectacular, it's not great either. What's really amusing to me is that the font doesn't remind me of a magazine for gifted kids, but rather a really dry political science textbook from some specialized university press. McCain's on the other hand, just makes me cringe so fucking much. It's wrong in so many ways--the weight's all off, and what the hell is that sans-serif but not really bullshit? I've never seen this blog before, but I am totally going to read it now. (Fonts make me wish I had talent for design.)

Also, Obama and Clinton as types of fandoms? I <3 [livejournal.com profile] dsudis.

[eta:] Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sweetstickfigs, take a look at the variations on the main Obama logo. Now that is some fucking well-crafted branding. Curious though, that the campaign uses the term "First Americans" as opposed to "Native Americans." I'm not familiar with that particular terminology as used for the indigenous people who were here before the white guys came.

And because I've been searching all over for these surprisingly well-hidden things on an otherwise navigable site, linky images and buddy icons for Obama. It's interesting that the first iteration of the downloads section is still up and accessible, and seeing the difference between them.

Goddamn.

(or, why it would be good to have a constitutional lawyer as president)

Prairie View A&M is a historically black college in Waller County outside of Houston. Historically, they've been disenfranchised, not just because of race but because of their status as students. Thirty years ago, they fought and successfully won the right for college students to vote in districts where they attend school. You'd think that would have been enough to ensure there would be no hinky-pinky in regards to voting disenfranchisement, but in 2004 the county DA declared them ineligible to vote, saying they did not meet residence requirements. In 2006 local black leaders filed a complaint against the county, alleging malfunctioning machines and inadequately trained staff. In 2008, the nearest early voting station to the college is seven and a half miles away. 1000 student voters and 1000 friends and allies walked the entire distance to the two voting machines and stood in line to cast their ballots. And they're going to do this until the county gets them more voting machines.

I am a cynical bastard. I suspect I always will be, sorry kind of wisdom or no. But sometimes, something will come along that makes me shut the hell up. This is one of those things.

[eta:] Aerial pictures. I am deeply aware of the irony of them being supplied by a Fox News affiliate.
