With fanfiction, there is usually satisficing. Something might not hit perfectly or the writing might not be the quality you're hoping for, but it's close enough to scratch the itch. And there are degrees of characterization drift that one has to allow for, because there are so many situations that are not explored in the work itself. For me, as long as you can see that train of logic, I'll go with it, even if it's not the decision I would have made.
I'm just irritated because this particular (OFMD) fic series was going so well! ( Read more... )
We need to kill the notion that unforeseen plot twists are a good thing, especially when there's absolutely no foreshadowing of it previously. It's a dick thing to do to a reader and for fic of a show that constructs its narratives thoughtfully and purposefully, it's kind of insulting.
I'm also annoyed because I wanted to see this trainwreck through to the end, but there are two more fics in the series. I'm going to read them and I'm going to hate doing so, but I need to see how bad it gets.
[edit 5/12] There were three more fics in the series and I hate that I did read them all because they kept getting stupider and stupider. I should have been sensible and listened to my gut when it said "Eject eject!" Also, you know how sometimes you read author's notes and you get the impression they think they're extremely fucking clever when they're really really not? You should always be wary of fics written by people like that.
