Feb. 10th, 2009 10:35 pmYou should read this fic. It cuts to the heart of this particular incarnation of the Doctor (but revels in it, especially physically) and the fronts he puts on, and how Martha really is good for him. You can see hints of this through the show, but it only ever gets fleshed out in fic, which is what makes it so lovely.
So I've been watching Doctor Who Confidential to get more context and history, and it's been helpful in aiding my understanding of how exactly New Who is different from Old Who. The problem is, every time RTD appears to talk about whatever I kind of want to punch him. Not just because of what happened at the end of series 4, but because of how things could have been so much better with well, everybody. It really doesn't help that RTD seems to have this flair for the panto and melodramatic that overrides anything that might resemble, I dunno, logical character growth. Not to say that it doesn't happen just through pure movement of plot, but it always seems like there should be more, and it bothers me when it seems that fans understand their characters better than their creators. This happened sometimes with Harry Potter, occasionally with Veronica Mars, but never with Joss's stuff. I'm not really sure what it all means, but I don't like the idea of a show where my conception of how things should go is so utterly incongruent with the show runner's, and they can't convince me over to their side.
(I guess that's just a really long-winded way of saying I'm anxious about series 5. Because I think about these things instead of pondering useful and necessary things like performance management.)
