Feb. 11th, 2008 05:05 pmIt's chock full of politics today.
Here's a recording of the conference call that Obama made to the Democrats Abroad. No, I wouldn't have known about it either if
cow hadn't forwarded me an email. Perhaps because of the audience, there was a lot of discussion about America's role in the world and how we are all connected, economically as well as in a humanitarian manner. He talks about the inevitability of globalization, and also about the inequity of its largess and America's responsibility to help the developing world along, but in a manner that also helps build them up (and that was an awful run-on sentence). "If all of you can imagine the day I'm inaugurated," he said, and I got goosebumps.
No you can't. I'm sorry, but that Yes we can video was just a phenomenal speech ruined. I don't really care about the political opinion of the guy who played Claire's skeezy boyfriend in Six Feet Under, or the fact that Obama seems to have the young pretty people demographic sewn right up. So this (admittedly silly) parody made me giggle. And shit, $50/hour to pick lettuce? Where do I sign up?
I think Paul Krugman's a smart man, but he is so full of shit in this column. It pisses me off mightily when the press exercises what he calls "Clinton rules" against Hillary. I don't like her much, and I won't vote for her if I don't have to, but I will defend her to the death against this misogynistic spew.
And for my own reference, because it's taken me a goddamn long time to find a site with donation numbers: OpenSecrets's Election '08 section. Good god that's a lot of money raised, by everybody.

Date: 2008-02-12 03:36 am (UTC)In proportion to what she's done, the amazing amount of shit she gets from Republicans and the mainstream press is just incredible. I feel terrible for her in regards to that. There is nothing that would unite a fracturing (I found it hilarious the Washington caucus vote was split four ways, with McCain barely squeaking by) Republican party more than a Clinton nomination. Rush Limbaugh is actually considering fundraising for her. Whether this is him shit-talking or being serious is another matter, but that's just... wow. And it amazes me how many sensible-seeming people will start spewing the most vile sexism once somebody mentions her name.
Even if she gets elected, she's going to have to fight every step of the way to get anything done, and I think that she will have to compromise a lot more, which pretty much defeats the purpose of trying to get reforms in Washington. Obama will have to fight too, but I think he'll have less of a hard time of it, and the police interrogation bill he passed in Illinois tells me he knows how to work with people to get what he wants done. I have nothing against her as a person, really, and I respect her a lot for not just not completely falling apart under incredible pressure, but transcending that and accomplishing what she has. I just disagree with her politics and don't think she's the right person for this election.
(And that was probably way more than you wanted to know. Sorry.)
