So apparently the Science Fiction Writers of America board basically voted to reinstate the previous e-piracy committee, with the same idiot who ran it before. Said nincompoop is also a vice president of the board and voted for himself, which would seem dodgy in Florida. (For background, go here. That link is admittedly biased, but not inaccurate.)

After reading that Wired article about the Universal CEO (which would be laughable, pathetic, and sad if it weren't about, y'know, the head of a major music company), I almost wonder if it's a generational thing, old farts clinging desperately to the paradigms they know and are comfortable with and unable to adapt to something they don't understand. But it can't be the only thing. LIS also has their fair share of these types of people, but they also have people like of my professors, who saw the possibilities of this new medium and embraced it. I don't know. It was just something that occurred to me.

That reminds me of the outrage one of my friends had over the Kindle (http://www.newsweek.com/id/70983/page/1). But there is definitely something to be said about the experience of holding and smelling vinyl LPs and leather-bound books.

There's something about the physical and the tactile that is so embedded into our brains. The transmission of information through largely invisible means is only about a hundred and fifty years old. I don't think evolution has totally caught up with that.

Speaking of the smell of books, this (http://bblinks.blogspot.com/2007/11/bookish-scents.html) amused me greatly.
