that's fair! Thane is pretty awesome; I never got too attached to him -- I think I liked him as a man and father, rather than a lover? -- but I see the appeal. and clearly my garrus/shepard tin hat is kind of...bent, since any and every idea I have for them involves her sleeping with other people, not, you know, Garrus.
I have to say half the fun of Thane/Shepard is finding the badfic written by the kids who are all sekret romantic goths and finding all the hilariously soppy fic. Also the fanart with terrible pop song lyrics. (Which is in every pairing, but truly hilarious for this one.)
i used to absolutely adore badfic (no, really, oodles) but I think dragon age actually soured me on a lot of it, because that was just so. fucking. bad. like -- I was about to make a laced-heroin-and-overdose joke, but that's really not funny, so suffice it to say, sometimes things are just terrible.
Dragon Age badfic seems to be especially awful, because in addition to being bad, it ropes in so much actual squick and distress (do not get me started on the myriads of Fenris/Danarius everything ugh ugh ugh). Power dynamics in Thedas are fucked up, and it seems to bring out so much gross. Sometimes after trolling through the Dragon Age tag I just feel a need for a shower. :/
I find the Fenris/Danarius LESS fucked up than a lot of it because that, at least, is like -- it's understandably OMG EVIL MAN.
okay, maybe I'm just hoping. I've never read any of it. there are only two -- three if you count War Mage, which I stopped reading before it was finished -- Seheron/Tevinter set stories that I enjoyed. one is "Head of the Household", with a confused Hawke finding Fenris. it has some disturbing power dynamics, but despite that I really kind of enjoy it? the other is loquaciouspark's "Spire".
what really bothers me is all the Fenris/Anders disturbing. because nothing tops weird and uncomfortably taking advantage, than a mage-hating elf being topped violently by a creepy fucking mage.
Huh. I am always curious to see what people do with Seheron/Tevinter. Maybe I will check those out.
I can never tell which I find more disturbing, the Fenris/Anders or the Merrill/Anders. Like, they're both horribly abusive in different ways? And yet they just keep getting shipped and written about and aughhhh
loquaciousspark (which I am spelling wrong, but like, if you filter the Fenris/Hawke stories to "completed" and by "word count", Spire is like, the fifth or sixth) writes the best DA stories ever. like ever. she was the one that wrote the 1890s vampire AU that is the BEST THING EVER.
and I'mna go with Fenris/Anders, because I cannot picture that one without someone being forced in some way. at least anders/merrill, I can see them liking each other. kind of. at some point in their lives.
of course, I have a strange and deep love for the concept of Bethany/Fenris, so.

Date: 2013-05-11 01:42 am (UTC)idk why, but I want to write all the Shep/Thane. Apparently the possibility of hallucinogenic toadlicking sex is too much to pass up.
