So apparently Jerry Falwell is in critical condition due to a bout of pneumonia. Would it be horrible of me to pray to his God for his death? I mean, He is a pretty mean spiteful old bastard.

And, the sheep song. If you have never heard Nathan sing it, it is quite possibly the funniest thing ever.

Personally, I can't wait until the Pope pops his holy clogs. That fucker stole my church from me and millions of other humane people. The sooner he goes to his eternal reward (which will, I know, be an omniscient bitchslap), the happier I'll be.

My history of the papacy after Pius XII is kind of sketchy, but hasn't John Paul II pretty much just solidified attitudes already held within the church? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression the ol' bastard dragged the church kicking and screaming a couple centuries forward.

Well, under his influence, the liberation theologist priests were mostly moved to backwaters unless and until they agreed to toe the line. Innovations like female altar servers were discouraged. Any progress toward women in the priesthood or church hierarchy was beaten back. JP's reign has been reactionary in the extreme. Or maybe I just grew up during that brief period when Roman Catholicism and humanism were holding hands. The Church of my childhood and youth was like Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar: Compassion. Human failing. Joy. Love without judgement. These were what I believed in. Then they told us we couldn't be altar girls anymore and I realized that John Paul II's Church didn't want me. I wasn't male. I wasn't good enough to take an active role in the mass -- unless you count putting flowers on the altar.

I don't expect much more from the next Pope. If anything, the Church has gotten more reactionary in the last ten years. But I'll always blame this Pope for kicking me to the curb.
