Sep. 29th, 2004 06:20 pmA messy home is a happy home, and this home is delirious.
I live in a town of paternalist idiots. See, I live in a shiny new complex owned by the Vancouver Housing Authority. They do inspections every so often. Fine. They did inspections twice in a month in August, and they came in, poked around, and left. Today, while consulting our manager on something completely unrelated, she said that the housing authority told her we had "housekeeping issues."
What the fuck, people? We're not the cleanest people on the planet, but it's nothing more than typical college and working student messiness. We don't leave piles of food on the floor to rot or anything. As long as there aren't any permanent stains, why the fuck does it matter how I keep my home? It sounds ridiculously whiny, but it's still part of this pervasive stupid moral double standard where one's eligibility for aid of any sort is somehow contingent on being deserving. Shouldn't a housing authority be working on securing access to affordable housing and making sure the people who need it know where and how to get it, rather than bitching about how people clean (or don't)?

Date: 2004-09-30 05:03 am (UTC)For serious??? That is...madness. You know, I fucking hate when people drop these vague accusations and don't have the guts to back them up with anything like an actual fact. I once got a letter from my building management because someone was under the impression that I had spilled cat litter all around the garbage chute. Now, I'm not the only cat owner on the floor. I am the only "single woman" (i.e., I have a three bedroom condo for just me--at least until Kathie arrives) who is not of the particular ethnic background shared by the majority of the residents. Therefore, I am the number one suspect when anything happens. Pisses me right the fuck off.
