If you eat this stuff, I would so not read this article on how Quorn is made. (logins/passwords)

"We had never heard of mycoprotein but we looked into it and found that it was a synonym for mold," he said. "At the very least the product--even if tasty and nutritious--was mislabeled."

So? Roquefort cheese has spores from moldy bread sprinkled on it, and nobody seems to flip out about that. I also am rather dubious of the concerns put forth by this organization, especially as Gardenburger (no longer local, alas) is helping pitch in for the fight.

I'm equally skeptical about both sides. Part of it is that my knee-jerk reaction to any article by a major news outfit, but I'm willing to bet that there are interests behind its publication. I agree that Michael Jacobson's evidence (at least based on the information this article is willing to give us; I'd like to look further into his findings before I make a concrete conclusion) seems scant, and that he may well be working for Gardenburger in this case. On the other hand, the writing of this article seems carefully calculated to make Jacobson look ridiculous, and it can't be discounted that some of his previous media crusades have warrant (for example, the serious health issues associated with Olestra). Near the end of the article, we are given an "expert" opinion by Michael Fumento, a fellow at the Hudson Institute Think Tank; I don't claim to know much about this institute, but a brief glance at its website yields a)a decidedly conservative stance; b)no evidence that anybody working for the institute is an expert on nutrition. So I have to wonder: for whose benefit is this columnist writing, and what interests are behind her decision to ridicule those who would keep Quorn off the markets?

Basically, both sides are wrong, and you can't trust anybody. =/
