State of the Union rehash from MSNBC.

I threw my soda into the sink at work in a fit of pique when he mentioned the Defense of Marriage act and a constitutional amendment to bar gay marriage. And that was about as far as I saw into the speech.

"Unless you act, the unfair tax on marriage will go back up,” he said. “Unless you act, millions of families will be charged $300 more in federal taxes for every child. Unless you act, small businesses will pay higher taxes. Unless you act, the death tax will eventually come back to life."

Raaaar! It's the zombie death tax! Quick, somebody call Giles!

"the system of private medicine that makes America's health care the best in the world"

Do(es) the Brit, Belgian, Australian, and/or Canadians on my friends list care to issue a rebuttal?

The speech was declared a “national special security event,” putting the Secret Service in charge of all preparations.

That is only a few steps away from "Supercomputer Robot Bush." [/cryptic injoke]

Dean had better get off his ass and shut up. Otherwise I'm going to be pining for Canada and Belgium for the next four years.

Speaking of the Secret Service, what's all this I hear about "Free Speech Zones"? Has Bush managed to turn the US into an Orwell novel?

basically: when Bush, or whoever--Clinton did this too, although not so MUCH--is giving a talk, or going out in public, the general public is not permitted within a certain distance--usually a few hundred feet. Frequently, supporters with signs are allowed near while protestors are barred. The concept of FSZ is sometimes extended to arrest/charge people who are protesting not in the vicinity of any particular politician, but its basic purpose is to keep Bush from seeing/having to look at people who disapprove.

Related issue is the redefining of malls as private space rather than public, so protest can be shut down there, even though in suburbia a mall is pretty much the equivalent of a town square.

I'm moving to Canada.

The very concept of Free Speech Zones is so much something out of a bad SciFi novel, dude. I mean. Seriously.

And you should move to Canada! Or Belgium! But Canada has a better postal service. (I'm very impressed with Canadian Post right now.)

Rebuttal.

It's pretty well established at this point that Bush is simply incapable of uttering a single statement remotely resembling reality, so I don't really have much to say.
