And of course, what do my parents do? They skip off to Guangdong, the bloody epicenter of this SARS outbreak. I really should call them and find out if they're all right.

The other day, I came home after school, and the first thing my host mother told me before I did ANYTHING was to wash my hands and my face and brush my teeth? Why? Because of the SARS threat. Now, I don't worry too much (for better or for stupid) about getting the disease, but it's so odd, how one's perspective of the world changes when one's geographical location changes. Hong Kong used to be far away; now it's practically next door. People here are worried, not just about SARS, but about a lot of things that Americans don't ever think about.
