So fucking depressed. Too much war coverage, reports from friends in Canada telling me I only have half the facts--the bright shiny half that the government and Pentagon want to tell me and the American people. Realizing the protestors are a bunch of liberal wanks who think they mean well but end up wasting everybody else's time. Multnomah County's head sheriff has declared that now that there are free beds in the jails, he's going to throw protestors in them instead of hauling back all the people they had to let go because of cuts in funding.

Reading Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker series; there's this one part in there where William Blake is telling Alvin about how Ben Franklin created the American identity, about how he made a common label that could apply to anybody who wanted to work hard and live in a land big enough to accomodate the Dutch, the Indians, the French, and the Puritans. Wanted to cry because I so desperately want to still believe in the myth, am here because my parents believed in it, but I can't.

I want to renounce my American citizenship and move to Canada.

As for the American identity....

The myth is just that, a myth.

However, at the same time I must say that I feel the U.S. is still one of the most immigrant-friendly and racially tolerant countries. It's far from perfect, of course, but I really feel sick when other countries act as if it's only an American problem.

Besides, given the recent shifts in Chinese population make up, I wouldn't be surprised if Canada disappoints you.
