Panic grips Guangdong as mystery pneumonia-like virus kills 6
As the infection spreads, shops have been cleared of medicine
Guangzhou residents have cleared pharmacy shelves of antibiotics and flu medication as a mysterious virus that has killed six people and infected 100 others continues to spread.
Guangdong health department spokesman Fung Shaoming said the virus causes people to develop so-called atypical pneumonia. It was first reported in Heyuan about two months ago and has since spread throughout the province. He played down the risk and urged people to remain calm.
"It's not as serious as rumoured," Mr Fung said. "It appears serious because all the cases have been referred to Guangzhou hospitals."
The health department would hold a news conference in the coming days to clarify the situation, he said, adding that the government should have been more proactive in disseminating information about the disease.
An official with the Guangdong health department said medical staff were culturing the virus in order to identify it. Samples were also sent to experts in Beijing for tests. "We are still investigating what causes the infection. We are standardising actions for the control and treatment of the disease in hospitals," he said.
The Hong Kong Department of Health said yesterday that it was concerned about the reports and had contacted mainland authorities for more information.
Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food Yeoh Eng-kiong said there was no cause for panic because Hong Kong had a good surveillance system for infectious diseases. But he urged anyone who suffered from fever after travelling to consult a doctor.
A Hong Kong man's five relatives living in Zhongshan were infected last month. An elderly man from the family died after being admitted to hospital.
Doctors treating the family failed to find the source of infections.
A Hong Kong doctor told the South China Morning Post yesterday that the man contacted him three weeks ago for help after his relatives in Zhongshan contracted the unknown infection.
"The man said some other families in Zhongshan were also infected. The local doctors had tested the patients' urine for Legionnaires' Disease but they still do not have a clue [what caused the infection]," the doctor said.
Lei Qiang, a professor at the Guangzhou-based Zhongshan University, said the panic over the virus started when reports about people getting sick were sent via short messages on mobile phones in Guangzhou.
"Many people in Guangzhou swarmed to chemists yesterday to purchase traditional Chinese herbal tea after the news about the spread of pneumonia came out," Professor Lei said.
A circular appeared in yesterday's Yangcheng Evening News acknowledged discovery of the disease and designated it as communicable.
Some of the preventive measures listed in the circular include improving ventilation in offices and homes, using vinegar fumes to disinfect the air, washing hands frequently, keeping warm and wearing masks when in contact with patients.
As a result of the advice, shops in Shenzhen and other cities in the province have sold out of vinegar
The lack of accurate information about the virus has led to wild speculation. Some reports circulating on the Internet claim 200 people became sick and 30 died after being exposed at Guangzhou's World Trade Centre building alone. The building management reacted by disinfecting the office cum commercial complex.
On Monday, the first working day for most people after a nine-day break for the Spring Festival, the virus was a hot topic.
A medical worker at Zhongshan University's No. 2 Hospital said the illness has hit 17 staff at the hospital.
"The symptoms are the same as for flu except that your lungs are also infected," she said. "It's spread by close contact with people and in places where ventilation is bad."
She said that patients were isolated in the communicable disease centres of Nanfang Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences No. 3 Hospital, Guangzhou Medical College No. 1 Hospital and Guangzhou Infectious Diseases Hospital. ,. from the South China Morning Post.
Fuckfuckfuckfuck. It's bad that there's been no press on this, and that the officials are trying to downplay the risk. I really hope they find out what's going on soon.

Not that this has anything to do with anything, but this is really fucking funny. I've seen watches with Mao waving, but never one with Deng.
