That is indeed the suck, although I really have no attachment to the space program beyond the usual childhood astronaut aspirations and a visit to Cape Canaveral when I was eight. The idea of looking out on the world from gods-know-how high up, and seeing it in its entirety, surrounded by billions of stars (the Greeks thought the celestial bodies made music. I can see why), however, is something I always hoped would become accessible to the masses in my lifetime. To be able to see that, once, would outweigh any risk of death for me. I hope the crew of the Columbia felt the same way.
