Jan. 13th, 2003 08:57 pmThis is so fucking stupid I want to throw a tantrum. Teacher's lesson on 'N' word angers parents.
Schumacher teaches literature, and she thought it would be helpful to read about the many uses of the [n-]word, Stewart said. The material she chose incorporated jokes, prose and poetry, but it also contained offensive language, he said.
...
Gilkey said several people objected to distribution of the material.
It's not like she was dressed in a sheet screaming it while waving around a cross, for god's sakes. Yes, I recognize the word is still used as a racial epithet, and that sucks, but to give the word a context and history of its many uses over the years strikes me as something to be commended, not something people should freak out about (cf the Never-Ending Huck Finn Debate). Besides, to hold the word in such horror only increases its power. If everybody used it, it wouldn't be an epithet anymore.
