Mar. 10th, 2013 04:43 pmOMG WHY DID I NOT WATCH KINGS EARLIER WHYYYYY.
So people (including
some_stars ) kept raving about it and how amazing it was, but I have to admit I had no actual interest in watching until I realized that Sebastian Stan and his ridiculously louche lips were in it. It's really good! The way it was pitched (a sci-fi series based on the Book of Kings!) seemed kind of hokey, and I was kind of boggling they literally had a character named David throwing wrenches at a Goliath (tank), but so far, I like it.
It feels a little bit like Babylon 5, in the way it sets up exploration of all these Shakespearean themes about power, kingship, family, and succession. Handled wrong it could be really soap-opera-y and trashy, but that doesn't seem to be happening as of the pilot. Part of what elevates the show is the language. I understand that some critics found the dialogue overly contrived, but I think it echoes beautifully back to Judeo-Christian religious language without bashing you over the head with it. You might as well give it a shot, since it's on Hulu for free. (For those of you who do not live in the United States, I can recommend Hotspot Shield or TunnelBear for IP spoofing.)
(This is also a bleg for fic, not that I anticipate I will have too much difficulty sifting through AO3 because there's only 106 works under the "Kings" tag. Sob sob.)
