Context: I have been coding open-ended responses for a Big-Ass Library Survey. It has been interesting seeing what people have to say, and I have been touched by many people's testimonials about how important libraries and specifically library-provided Internet and computing have been for them. I have also been absolutely appalled at some of the less... enlightened responses I have read, of which the one below is an example:

[personal profile] pearwaldorf: Wat too many people playing games and looking up porn, if filters are not turned on. Library computers are great for e-mail and job search, but I feel My space and Face Book are a waste of time. I've used both at a public library and now I feel like if that's all your going to the library for, you should have your own home computer. There's a real problem in most library form people only coming in to play games and use My space.
[personal profile] pearwaldorf: Check your privilege or I punch you in the dick, asshole.
[personal profile] cow: have you ever been to boston's main library?
[personal profile] pearwaldorf: No
[personal profile] cow: the whole outside is done in roman stylings
[personal profile] cow: similar to those found on basilicas and monuments in ancient Rome, in the entablature on each of the main building's three façades. On the south is inscribed: "MDCCCLII • FOUNDED THROUGH THE MUNIFICENCE AND PUBLIC SPIRIT OF CITIZENS"; on the east: "THE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF THE CITY OF BOSTON • BUILT BY THE PEOPLE AND DEDICATED TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF LEARNING • A.D. MDCCCLXXXVIII"; and on the north: "THE COMMONWEALTH REQUIRES THE EDUCATION OF THE PEOPLE AS THE SAFEGUARD OF ORDER AND LIBERTY".
The last quotation has been attributed to the library's Board of Trustees. Another inscription, above the keystone of the central entrance, proclaims: "FREE TO ALL".
[personal profile] cow: the last of them is the one i saw first (going in through the central entrance)
[personal profile] cow: just this giant roman entranceway with "FREE TO ALL" above it
[personal profile] cow: i was like <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
[personal profile] cow: and the rest of them are so awesome too
[personal profile] cow: "THE COMMONWEALTH REQUIRES THE EDUCATION OF THE PEOPLE AS THE SAFEGUARD OF ORDER AND LIBERTY".
[personal profile] cow: we can put that above the door and then, below it
[personal profile] cow: CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE OR I PUNCH YOU IN THE DICK, ASSHOLE
[personal profile] cow: it'll be great.
[personal profile] pearwaldorf: I endorse this
