You knew it was coming...
May. 19th, 2002 01:02 pmI was prepared not to like it, judging from the wide chasm of reviews from the establishment newspapers and the alt-weeklies. Hell, the Mercury didn't like it, and I could have sworn from their Spiderman issue that there were bunches of dweeby geekboys on the staff. But it wasn't bad. It was pretty good, but it wasn't great.
It seemed to get off to a really clunky start for me, and the scads of CG effects didn't help much. It seemed Lucas was trying to use the movie as a design portfolio for ILM. (Looky! We can do this and this and this, and don't forget this...) And I'm sorry, but Hayden Christensen couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. Perhaps it was bad direction (Mr. Lucas should have did for this what he did for Empire and hire a new director) and Life as a House was better, but every time he was on the screen during the first half of the movie it was like nails on a chalkboard. He got better though, and I commend him for that rather horrific rollercoaster scene at the Lars' homestead. Lessee... impotent rage, it's Obi-Wan's fault, I'm gonna be the most powerful Jedi ever, I want my mommy. One hell of a way to cram all that into five minutes of screen time.
Ewan McGregor was wonderful, as always. "You'll be the death of me." !!! And he was like, totally hott too. :D I was pleased to see that Mace Windu was given more screen time, as Samuel L. Jackson kicks complete and total ass. Plus, he also edges up the minority quotient in the SW universe to SIX now!
I was most pleased with the Jedi scenes. The young Padawan(s?) were adorable; it was just so cute to see Yoda staring up at these little children. And the Jedi battle was kickass. (Nitpick though: Did Windu ever give a thought to who would protect the galaxy if all those Jedi got mowed down?) It must have been a sight to see at the height of the Old Republic, all those Jedi with those lightsabers. It was beautiful. And Yoda kicks ASS! ^.^ ("Mm... threaten me you will? With my mad Force skillz your hiney I will whip.")
Bits and pieces:
I was pleased to note that Leia's mother is also like her daughter: beautiful, resourceful and capable.
Jimmy Smits as Bail Organa. ::snickers::
I know it's supposed to be all epic and shit, but somehow, the saga became more personal, more human, for me in this movie. And I think that's better.
