It is the habit of people to scoff at things that they've heard a thousand times because the repetition inures you to the actual truth of the matter. And then something happens that reminds you with sharp and startling clarity that the reason things become cliche is because they are true.
I didn't know John Caspell (and I think I would have liked to), but he is important to people I care about, and that's enough. He taught me that things can change in an instant, regardless of what people who know what they're talking about tell you, and that is precisely why living every day like it is your last isn't a bad way to go about things. So call your family, read that book you've had sitting on your shelf for months, and when that person you've been wondering about finally asks you to hang out, for gods' sake say yes. Be nice to each other. You might not get a chance to apologize later.
And while I'm at it, I wanted to tell you all that you're awesome. I like what you have to say, about fandom and other things, and you make me laugh and think. Some of us go back a ways (and some of us go back a LOT of ways, like seriously last millennium wtf), and I'm glad I've had the chance to share in your lives. But regardless of how long we've been acquainted, I'm glad I know you. <3
(And to the people I've recently friended on Dreamwidth, I'm not this scary normally. Honest.)
