Summary: There is no difference between history and historiography, not the way humans experience it. They can extrapolate what could be missing, point out what definitively is, and the specific reasons why. But for most eons past, there is no way to ask someone who was there, or even read about it, assuming somebody bothered to write things down with all the necessary contextual details.

Which is to say, there are many times he will read accounts (usually written by people who weren’t even alive at the time) of what people thought happened during a particular event, and he will go, “That’s not how it went.”
