Whee. I went to go see Bluebeard's Castle/Erwartung Sunday and it was great fun. I didn't really expect to enjoy two operas about a scary fairytale dude (and the most deluded opera heroine ever, who expects to redeem her husband through the power of twue wuv) and the ramblings of a crazy lady quite as much as I did. I took great amusement in imagining Bluebeard's castle as a sort of TARDIS, because I'm not quite sure how one fits vast amounts of conquered lands in a little stone box without Time Lord technology. But seriously, it was fabulous. Psychological without being pretentious, and totally freaking amazing when his former wives, who may or may not have been murdered, materialize out of the pool, red as slaughter. If you're in Seattle, you should go see it. Tickets are $29 including service charge, which is well worth the price.

And you get to see the really stuffy opera-goers get put off by all the blood in Bluebeard and wailing in Erwartung, which is pretty fun too.

Bluebeard's Castle is one of my favorite operas! And, I think, the opera that gave us the idea that became the facebook group about operas teaching us how to date. (The moral of Bluebeard, of course, being "Don't date guys with baggage.") :P

Someone ::cough:: who, like, just started a fic journal or something ... could perhaps expand on this.
