Sep. 26th, 2007 08:36 pmNow that I am fully immersed in the world of academia, I am reading Crooked Timber more. I found this stuff today:
A truly quantitative method of academic dick-measuring. It's called Publish or Perish, and it trawls Google Scholar and measures a bunch of factors that are supposed to indicate how influential an academic is. I kind of want to release this onto the faculty listserv and see what happens. Does that make me a bad person?
Also, apparently academics in other fields are hella boring.
starstealingirl and I were talking about this the other day, because my program seems to emphasize balance and sociability so much more than I would have expected for grad school. She theorized it was because it's not so much preparation for a way of life as with programs that are explicitly pre-doctoral. Even so, most faculty I've talked to don't look like they would declare sudoku or landscape restoration as a guilty pleasure, for which I am profoundly grateful.
