So apparently there was a posthumous two-disc Elliott Smith album that came out last week that I knew absolutely nothing about. Not a fucking peep from the music blogs or the Portland blogs. I found out about it from fucking Newsweek. I downloaded it (a physical copy is on its way if buy.com ever gets off its ass) and it's lovely. It's all archival unreleased stuff written when Elliott was on Kill Rock Stars and remastered by Larry Crane of Jackpot Studios and archivist of the Elliott Smith estate. Some of this stuff has been floating around on Bittorrent and a site that Sweet Adeline used to link to that I can't find anymore, but some of this stuff I've never heard, like "Going Nowhere." It's vintage Elliott, whispery and heartbreaking. There's also the cover of Big Star's "Thirteen," which is lovely and being released for the first time. I still miss him, more than I think sometimes.

You should pick it up also because the proceeds from the record go to Outside In, a social services organization for homeless kids in Portland. I've had friends who have personally benefitted from this place, and I've seen them do good for many other people. They also run a doggy daycare staffed by people they've helped get job training, the first (and only) facility of its kind in the country.

My car broke down again. It's the transmission this time, I think. Goddamn it.

Oh, cool. Raquel loves Elliott Smith, but I don't think she has any idea there's something "new" released.

I feel you on the car trouble, too -- just finished dealing with that, myself.

I could have sworn there was something about that in Willamette Week a few weeks ago, but I could be wrong... And nothing in Portland music blogs? Okay, that's just weird.

Virginia Woof! That has got to be the best name for a doggy daycare center EVER.
