Well, fuck. Amanda Marcotte resigned as one of the netroots coordinators for the John Edwards campaign. I was so thrilled when she got hired, and I was so angry when Edwards gave the lamest most pansy-assed milquetoast I'm-sticking-by-you-but-not-really statement of support when that crazy right-wing cumrag Bill Donohue decided to try and make an example of her as a woman and an atheist on, oh noes of all things, a Democratic campaign. Instead of saying "screw off you crazy fuckwads" like he should have, Edwards did nothing short of ask both Amanda and Melissa McEwan (the other blogger they hired) to resign, and I lost a lot of respect for him when he didn't. Now, to find another horse to back. I keep hearing whisperings that Gore's going to run...?

I figure it’s still an incredibly long time before the ’08 elections, and a lot of things can happen between now and then, so I haven’t really developed any preference for one Democratic candidate or another.* Hillary loses points for supporting the Iraq invasion early on, but hell, she’s a Clinton with hands firm on the party machinery. Barack’s got the young, new and exciting vibe going for him, but I haven’t actually heard much in the way of solid policy proposals (or at least haven’t looked into it). Edwards, well, even though he was technically the VP candidate in ’04, I keep thinking he’s had his chance already. And Gore, the man who should’ve been inaugurated in 2001? I read a fascinating article in Rolling Stone about why he should run, and why he’d win. They made an interesting point. He could simply say, ”Look back at the last eight years. Now imagine if I had been president.”

Of course just about anyone with a good diction, common sense, and something resembling a moral foundation (not crumbling) would make a better president than Bush. So yeah, the field is still wide, wide open.

* These days it’s hard to believe that I ever considered backing Republicans, ever.

I'm really not enthused about any of them. The less I say about Hillary Clinton, the better. I might not vote at all if she ends up being the front-runner, I dislike her that much. I like Barack Obama, but it's not his year. He needs a bit more seasoning and age, like a good wine. And while he is a very good speaker (as opposed to "articulate," thank you very much Joe Biden), I don't see that he has anything substantiative to say, really. And the fact that he is "post-racial," whatever the fuck that means, will work against him in so many ways on so many sides that it makes me want to tear out my hair just thinking about it. I was disappointed that Edwards behaved the way he did. He had some really good populist rhetoric going on, and he actually said the P(overty) word, which is more than I've heard from Obama or Hillary, and I really wanted to back him, but I refuse to support a candidate who's so damn spineless over a non-issue. And I would love for Gore to run, but in the eyes of the public, he's still that weird robotly guy who did that global warming movie after Bush became president, legitimately or not.
