If you see indie rock as just a genre of music and not a ripe peach bursting with the juices of musical credibility and boasting succulent flesh of emotional authenticity, the music was a soundtrack like any other, and it either fit or didn't. I personally place more stock in the explanation that Garden State was written and directed by one person, the soundtrack was created and compiled by the same guy, and thus the tunes contained were reflections of his taste, rather than a crudely-hidden grab at cred.
