Well, crapfuckingtacular. I just got fired from my job.

So I'm a bit of a flake, y'see, and I haven't shown up to work on two other occasions because I forgot I was going to work those days. Fine, I suck, that's my own damn fault. I show up when somebody calls and says "You're working today. Get yo' ass in here, bitch!" Sunday was one of those days I was supposed to work. But the night manager told the person who was working not to call me, for whatever reason. So hence, I am out of a job. For the stupidest fucking reason possible.

I feel really bad about it, because that basically doomed poor coworker to closing all by herself on a busy Sunday night, not to mention totally screwing over my manager, who will be having two people quit in the next couple weeks and one person on tour with her band. With me, that makes four people she has to replace rather quickly, and I would much rather not have to inconvenience her like that when she's tried so hard to keep me. So, yes. Very annoyed.

After that depressing screed, I think you should have a happy link. Here.

Ugh. I'm sorry. I hope that you're able to find another soon, and that your manager is able to find some people.

Wow... I'm so sorry! I assume you'll be looking for another job... what sort of work do you want?

Um, at this point? Pretty much anything that isn't grocery or fast food. Waitressing is on the edge, but I will take it if I need to. I would be thrilled with office or barista work, but with experience in neither, I think it will be a bit hard to come by.

If you can type (and I'm assuming you can) and have a reasonable knowledge of computers, you could easily get hooked up with a job through a temp agency. I got my current position with Adecco -- they ask you to come in and take a test, to check your ability levels. If you need a job to work around your school schedule, maybe try Spherion (another agency) because I know they go to a concerted effort to employ students. If you need any other rec's, let me know. I've got plenty up my sleeve during my past times of being unemployed in Portland.

If you don't mind bartending, I hear that pays quite well and works with student schedules.

Ah, lovely. Thank you. I shall go in sometime this week. Do these temp jobs ever lead to permanent employment or is it pretty much a two weeks here, two weeks there sort of thing? And do any other companies besides Spherion try to work around your school schedule? It's only for another month right now, but I figure I might as well ask. And what do you know about working for Starbucks? I figure with a bazillion locations in the Portland metro area, they have to have one opening.

When you got into temp agencies, they'll often ask you what kind of work you want and for what duration. When I quit my job in November, I signed up with like 10 different agencies (literally - and in this job market, it's absolutely necessary) and told them all that I preferred temp to hire work (which means you go in as a temp for a few months, then the actual company hires you) but that I would settle for temp work in the meantime before they found me a permanent position. You'll also want to tell them that your schedule will free up to make you full time in a month... another agency you might try for working around your school schedule is Employment Trends (Katie L. got her old job through them) - although I know they don't provide the highest paying jobs (Adecco does that) they certainly have more companies as clients, so they may be faster in finding you a job. I'd advise to get hooked up with these places as soon as possible, before school lets out, so you're ahead of the student summer rush.

Also, if you don't have a resume, you should work on that. All agencies will require a copy of your resume.

As for Starbucks, I really don't know. I know they provide great health insurance and a decent wage - the last time I applied there, I was in high school, and got rejected because I wasn't 18 yet. (They only hire 18+ which obviously isn't an issue for you.) I don't know if they require previous barista experience but if any coffee shop doesn't, it would be them.

Ohhhhhhhh tests. Terrible terrible tests. I've signed up with so many temp agencies that the mere sound of that sort of thing is.. well, terrible.

Alice, if you do go the temp agency way, go to like, 5, and increase your chances of getting something. And then call the agencies often, and in the morning.

Blechhhle. That's just stupid. You've worked there for how long now? Sigh. Sad little people with no power trying to pretend they have some. Never let anyone tell you that you're crazy when you say that Fred Meyer is evil.

(Somewhat interesting sidebar: I used to work at the insurance agency that handles (handled?) Kroger's workers comp. I have never *seen* so many claims. :P)
