Feb. 25th, 2004 11:39 pmHey everybody, look! My first "you're a conservative" accusation! I am amused.
Why do so many Kucinich supporters automatically assume that being pragmatic is the same as 'voting for whoever the media tells you to,' as another person in the comment thread said? First off, it doesn't matter if he placed second in Hawaii, because Hawaii is hardly representative of the rest of the nation, like a state like Iowa or Missouri might be.
Also, Kucinich, to most of the American public, is a fucking nutjob. (I would just like to preface this little rant by saying I have nothing personal against Kucinich. I think he's a nice guy, I like the things he says, and it would be great if he could be president. But he won't be. So there.) People on the coasts might not think so, being exposed to so many 'alternative lifestyles' and accepting it as a part of everyday life, but most people don't understand and distrust, or at the very least disdain, what Kucinich represents. He does not represent what people in the rest of the country want in a president, but rather all of this foofy hippie crap they think is detrimental to leadership. He's vegan, he wants to establish a Department of Peace, and he's for a lot of things they disagree with, like gay marriage and legalization of marijuana. (Yes yes yes, you can cite me polls and statistics, but until you show me the methodology behind it all, I'm not going to trust it. You can skew statistics any way you please if you just show numbers.) Of course, there are many things in his platform they would be for, but you know the Republicans are going to make the side things seem like bigger issues than they are.
Yeah yeah yeah, there's all that vote your conscience shit, but that's pretty much a bandaid to convince your poor conscience that you actually did something meaningful. There's no real impact in your primary vote if you know Kerry's going to win in your state anyways. And if you seriously think Kucinich has a chance, I'm the queen of fucking Morocco. Bow down and serve me chocolate. Of course, I question the value of a primary vote where only the people who are registered members of that party can vote, but I digress. I just don't see how exactly objectively assessing Kucinich's chances for the presidency somehow translates into me being a zombie who votes however the media tells her to.

That community is nothing but a spawning nest for petty arguing and other such uselessness. I joined it to post those entries about writing the mayor and Diane Linn, and I had to drop it three days later because the people in there were driving me crazy.

Date: 2004-02-26 11:51 am (UTC)And I dunno. It seems kind of pointless to me to support Kucinich when you know Kerry's going to win the ticket anyways. Rah rah rah, progressive values. So what? Nobody will give a shit come November, when everybody will be agitating on the ABB platform and Kerry's vote is all but assured from his supporters (except for the few Nader voters, who will be looked at piteously and condescendingly once we find out who they are :p). But that's me being cranky, mostly at wanky Kucinich supporters.

Date: 2004-02-26 02:22 pm (UTC)At this point, I think it's safe to say that Kerry's a shoe-in for the candidacy. And I know that come election day, I'll probably have to support him, but I don't have to like it, and I don't have to openly support him in any way until that day comes. I know that there are other issues on the proverbial table, but for obvious reasons same-sex marriage has been the one most on my mind lately, and Kucinich is the only candidate that supports it. Edwards doesn't, and Kerry said today that he'd support a constitutional amendment in Massachusetts nullifying their decision to legalize marriage there. I've thrown so much of my effort behind this issue as of late, and frankly, it hurts me too much to think that after all that effort, I'm going to have to throw my support behind someone who pretends to support me by virtue of not being Republican, but who really supports my being treated by a second-class citizen. I know that's maybe a bit self-indulgent and unrealistic, but I don't care-- I get personally involved in my politics. Besides, I'm 21-- I'm too damn young to think anything is pointless. I've made the decision to abstain from cynicism until I reach middle age. =P
Maybe Kucinich could join the Free State Movement, and we could all establish an autonomous leftist state in, say, Idaho or something. I think that would work. DENNIS KUCINICH 4EVA!!!!!!!!!

Date: 2004-02-26 05:58 pm (UTC)I do know. And I wasn't all that impressed by it. It was, however, one of the only good songs on the album.
the third track doesn't work
Raaar. When you get back into town(!!!!!) I'll reburn it for you. Also, when are you going to send the Vienna Teng CD? You probably need my new address, yes?
