Uh, nice. I read that thread, and I am not sure I see your point well.

The economy sucks everywhere. Jobs are a scarcity in any major U.S. urban area, and it's been like this for a while.

This midwestern hipster is staying put in her city, thanks very much, but I'm sorry to say I don't grok the negativity. Or, at the very least, I absolutely don't see the point in cultivating the attitude. It seems incredibly counter-productive to what you see as the problem with your city's financial state.

This sounds snotty as hell, but: It's a Portland thing. You wouldn't understand. Portland is currently overrun by transplants who move here and then bitch and complain incessantly about how negative/pretentious/depressing/racist/teeming with other transplants Portland is. So, uh, why don't they move the fuck back to California/South Carolina/Iowa/wherever and leave the natives alone? Oh, right, because Portland is still a million times better than the smalltown/big-town/redneck hell they moved out of, even if it's not the glorious hipster paradise they envisioned. Not that that ever quells the whining.
