I heard from some website which heard from some MD on Oprah that 72% of American women have never had an orgasm. Isis, Astarte and Aphrodite. This is like so incredibly wrong, and a far cry from times like the Renaissance where they thought women also had to orgasm to conceive(I'm not saying mapping male sexual experiences onto female ones like that is necessarily a good thing, but I'm sure a lot more women got off back then). We need to start something like those give small schoolchildren their first books programs, except that we'd be giving women vibrators. I mean, I can see Toys in Babeland and Bust sponsoring stuff like this. As my boyfriend (who I think is more feminist that I am sometimes) says, "Whoever controls the orgasms has the power." Isn't it time women finally took some of that power back?

I'd never really paid attention to the lyrics of A Perfect Circle's (check out the website; it's got some elegantly utilized Flash) song "Orestes" until I saw the band in concert, and it is an incredibly sad and disturbing song. I dug out my burn of Mer de Noms and put it on while I unpacked some more CDs tonight, and the song is just as disturbing and sad as when I first paid attention to it.

metaphor for a missing moment
pull me into your perfect circle
one womb one shape one resolve
liberate this will
to release us all

gotta cut away
clear away
snip away and sever this
umbilical
residue
that's keeping me from killing you

and from pulling you down with me
here
i can almost hear you
scream

give me one more medicated peaceful moment
give me one more medicated peaceful moment
because i don't want to feel this overwhelming hostility
because i don't want to feel this overwhelming hostility

gotta cut away
clear away
snip away and sever this
umbilical
residue
that's keeping me from killing you...
