My point in The Lord of the Rings: The Mythology of Power is that Tolkien celebrates littleness, the marginal, and difference; leadership as based on humility and love; and a rejection of war as a means of solving international disputes.
And this is why nobody in the Tolkien scholarship community pays attention to Jane Chance. I keep meaning to read through the book with a highlighter to point out all the strange inconsistencies and just random WTF?! conclusions. Perhaps I will do that on the train to Vancouver.
